Office of Lying "Closes"

Hi, David.

Practically daily I read a story about some aspect of the "War on Terrorism" or 9/11 by a foreign press, and say, "Wow, now isn't that interesting!" Then, every time, I remember that it might be an intentional lie by the U.S. government. I can never forget the "Office of Strategic Information" -- or whatever was the name of the office for creating or leaking news stories in the overseas press to confuse the enemy.

Every time I read the news now, in either the domestic or foreign presses, I know that I just can't know if it represents investigative journalistic reporting, or a fiction designed for a specific purpose I will never be aware of. This goes both for stories that would appear "good" for U.S. interests as well as ones that would appear "bad." The point is, we just never know what they're trying to get us to think. Sometimes it could even be double-negative reverse psychology -- a story that seems to have negative impact on the Bushies could in fact be intended for some reverse reaction. Who bloody knows?

My intent in writing to you know is to request that you remind readers of the Office of Strategic Information. They seem to have forgotten all about it; the media, both mainstream *and* progressive, sure have. People have to be very very careful these days about what they believe to be true. It's an awful feeling and fills one with bitterness, but better that than blissful deception.

Oh, never mind -- the Professional Liars said that they were no longer lying (see Rumsfeld Briefing). I forgot.

Sincerely,
JW
