Did Northwoods Finally Materialize?

John Stanton calls attention to Operation Northwoods, an early '60s plan by the Joint Chiefs of Staff to create a pretext for an invasion of Cuba by carrying out terror attacks against Americans in US cities.

In Operation Northwoods redux?, Stanton quotes some of the original document that laid out the design for attack on Americans by the US government. "The desired resultant from the execution of this plan would be to place the United States in the apparent position of suffering defensible grievances from a rash and irresponsible government . . . and to develop an image of a threat to peace in the Western Hemisphere," the document said matter-of-factly. "We could develop a Cuban terror campaign . . . in Washington . . . Hijacking attempts against civil air and surface craft should appear to continue . . . It is possible to create an incident which will demonstrate that a Cuban aircraft has shot down a chartered civil airliner en route from the US to Jamaica, Guatemala, Panama or Venezuela . . . It is possible to create an incident which will make it appear that Communist Cuban MIGs have destroyed a USAF aircraft over international waters in an unprovoked attack."

The most shocking thing is that high ranking American military men could devise such plans, but it happened and is documented. Clearly it happened, but the plan was not carried out. Reportedly it was rejected when presented to Kennedy's secretary of defense McNamara. And there it lay.

The Vietnam war was ignited by a phony pretext, but not a terror attack on US cities. Now we have the unelected son of the former head of the CIA running the country and we have been attacked -- allegedly by Osama bin Laden, a former CIA asset. Since the moment of the attack, the Bush regime has used it to further its right wing agenda. It has suppressed any attempt to fully investigate the incident itself. Even without an investigation there are mountains of suspicious data that suggest that the attack was allowed to happen, if not actually an inside job. What fact eliminates the possibility that the 911 attack was a version of Operation Northwoods that was not rejected?
